Is Maslow Right for me?

The image above is a representation of 20th century psychologist Abrah Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Maslow thought that generally people would work to fulfill their most basic needs first, and once those were secure, people would move up the hierarchy to meet higher-order needs. When a person has met all levels of needs, he/she is generally a happy, healthy, and whole person.

In your blog, discuss the level on which you think you belong. Which needs are you working to fulfill? And which have you already taken care of?

Some people disagree with Maslow's ordering of human needs. If you think the hierarchy is not reflective of your needs, at what level do your needs veer from Maslow's generalization?

This is Revenge...

Francis Bacon wrote, "Revenge is a kind of wild justice; which the more man's nature runs to, the more ought law to weed it out." Similarly, Sir Thomas More said, "Those who plot the destruction of others often perish in the attempt."

At the end of Act IV scene iv, Hamlet makes this statement: "O, from this time forth,
My thoughts be bloody, or be nothing worth!"

In this speech act, is Hamlet making a tragic error (that will eventually lead to his demise)? Or is he finally freeing himself from his own pathetic indecision? In other words, are Mr. More and Mr. Bacon right or wrong about revenge? Is it a bad thing to pursue? Why or why not?

Hint: Write this entry as a personal statement of belief (i.e. I believe that revenge is sometimes ok because...) that connects personal beliefs to Hamlet (i.e. Therefore, Hamlet is doing the right thing because...). It may also help you to remember a phrase (and its context, i.e. the story behind it) a famous Trojan once cried to the press: "This is revenge!"

Election

In this blog entry, I'd like you to detail your thoughts on the election. Here are some questions to help you start writing about it:

How do you feel about the outcome? Are you happy, upset, unwilling to deal with the results, indifferent? Why?

Did you make predictions about it? Were they correct?

Do you think that the results are reflective of the campaigns?

And if you could have elected anyone in the world, who would it have been and why?

This sounds like something from a job interview...

For today's blog, I want you to tell about a time when you had a conflict to resolve. What were the circumstances? Who was involved? Why and how did the conflict escalate or begin in the first place? What was at stake for you?

Then I want you to discuss how you resolved the conflict? What steps did you take to fix the problem? Were you satisfied with the outcome? What about the opposition?

And finally, what did you learn as a result of having the conflict?

"The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly; it is dearness only that gives everything its value. I love the man that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress and grow brave by reflection. 'Tis the business of little minds to shrink; but he whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves his conduct, will pursue his principles unto death."
